Plivo states that the pulse is 30 seconds for India. Recording storage is free for 90 days and is listed at $0.0004/min per month afterwards. The SIP Trunking page for India shows the same per-minute rate and a ₹200/month number, with volume discounts through sales. Confirm the live figures on Plivo's India voice pricing page before you budget.
One point to read carefully: Plivo's list shows inbound at the same rate as outbound. Do not assume incoming calls are free on this provider.
What an AI voice agent is actually billed for
When an AI agent talks on a Plivo number, the Plivo invoice has only a few lines.
- Call minutes, in either direction, counted in 30-second pulses. At the listed rate each pulse works out to ₹0.19, so a call of 2 minutes 5 seconds is billed as 2.5 minutes.
- Number rental for every Indian number you keep, whether it rings or not.
- Audio streaming, which carries the live call audio to the AI over a WebSocket. Plivo's docs recommend a bidirectional stream for voice agents, and the India price list shows streaming as included, with no separate per-minute line.
- Optional add-ons such as Noise Cancellation or Call Transcription, only if you switch them on.
What is not on the Plivo bill: the AI model, speech to text and the voice. Those are billed by your own AI and voice providers, and the Convo360 plan is a separate flat fee.
Plivo's payments page for India accounts says billing is in INR only, 18% GST is charged on invoiced amounts, Indian card recharges start at ₹2,000 with a 2% payment gateway fee, and netbanking recharges start at ₹10,000 with no gateway fee. Auto-recharge is not available for INR accounts, so you top up manually. The pricing page also advertises $10 in free credits with no credit card required.
KYC and Indian number rules to know first
Plivo's India calling docs are strict and worth reading before you sign up.
- Only businesses registered in India can rent Indian numbers and use domestic routes. Indian numbers are available only to an India data region organisation, and the data region cannot be changed later.
- KYC needs any one of: GST Certificate, Certificate of Incorporation, or Udyam Registration Certificate. Plivo says a business PAN alone is not accepted, and the first application must be sealed and signed by an authorised signatory.
- For 080 and 022 numbers Plivo describes the review as automated, typically within 5 minutes. The 140 and 160 series have a separate process.
- Landline series numbers are for service and transactional calls only. Promotional calls need the 140 series, and the 160 series is for BFSI.
- Your caller ID must be a Plivo-rented Indian number, and both legs of the call must stay within India.
Plivo's docs also state that cold calling is prohibited in India and that commercial calls need explicit digital consent under TRAI rules. This article is not legal advice. Read the Plivo India number KYC guide and our plain-language note on TRAI and DND care for AI calling.
A cost-per-call formula with illustrative minutes
The volumes below are ILLUSTRATIVE. Replace them with figures from your own call logs.
- Pulses per call = call seconds ÷ 30, rounded up
- Billed minutes = pulses × 0.5
- Call cost = billed minutes × ₹0.38
- Monthly telephony = (calls × call cost) + (numbers × ₹200), then add 18% GST on the invoiced amount
Illustrative month: 1,000 calls averaging 2 minutes 10 seconds on one number. That is 130 seconds, 5 pulses, 2.5 billed minutes, or ₹0.95 per call.
| Line | Illustrative volume | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Call minutes | 1,000 calls × ₹0.95 | ₹950 |
| Number rental | 1 domestic number | ₹200 |
| Subtotal | ₹1,150 | |
| GST at 18% | ₹207 | |
| Total to Plivo | ₹1,357 |
Real calls vary in length, so count pulses call by call rather than multiplying an average. The AI side of the bill is covered in AI voice agent cost per minute in India.
How to connect Plivo in Convo360
Convo360 is an India-first platform for AI voice calls and WhatsApp chatbots where you bring your own provider accounts. Voice calling is part of the Pro plan at ₹2,999/month excluding GST, and Convo360 adds zero markup on Plivo minutes.
- In Plivo, create an India data region organisation, complete KYC, recharge and rent a number.
- In Convo360 open Settings → Provider Keys, choose Plivo, paste your Auth ID and Auth Token, and press Test. Keys are encrypted at rest.
- Open Phone Numbers. Register the number you already own and pick Plivo as its provider, or search and buy a number from the same screen using your Plivo key.
- Click Enable incoming. Convo360 sets the number's inbound webhook for you, so there is nothing to paste into the Plivo console.
- Pick a voice agent from the dropdown on the number, with its voice, language and Call behaviour settings.
- Call the number from your own mobile as a test. For outbound, run a small campaign to two or three team phones first.
- Review the result. Every call is transcribed and can trigger an AI summary, a WhatsApp follow-up or a CRM lead, and Analytics shows call volumes.
If the Plivo key stops working or the balance runs out, provider health monitoring shows a clear alert in Convo360. That matters here because INR accounts cannot auto-recharge. Full setup notes are in the voice and phone numbers docs.
Ways to keep the Plivo bill down
- Think in pulses. A call of 2 minutes 1 second costs the same as 2 minutes 30 seconds. Trim long greetings and let the agent end the call promptly after the goodbye.
- Make inbound work harder. The listed inbound rate equals outbound, but every inbound minute is a conversation with someone who chose to call, with no unanswered dial attempts. Publish the number on your website, WhatsApp profile and Google listing. See the cost of missed calls.
- Call at sensible hours. Calls placed when customers usually pick up need fewer retries. Stay within permitted calling hours, consent and DND preferences.
- Skip add-ons you do not need. Convo360 already transcribes calls, so Plivo's Call Transcription at ₹0.81/min is usually unnecessary. Try the agent's Background noise handling before paying ₹0.12/min for Noise Cancellation.
- Recharge by netbanking when the ₹10,000 minimum suits you, to avoid the 2% card gateway fee.
- Release idle numbers. Each one is ₹200 a month.
