How to get your local business recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity
AI assistants recommend businesses they can find and trust on the open web. Let their search crawlers read your site, keep your Google Business Profile complete and current, publish plain-text answers to the questions customers ask, and earn steady, genuine reviews. Google says no special AI markup is needed, and nobody can pay for a better local ranking.
- ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Google AI features all depend on crawlers reading your public pages, so check robots.txt first.
- Blocking GPTBot (training) does not remove you from ChatGPT search, which uses a separate crawler called OAI-SearchBot.
- Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, and says there is no way to pay for a better local ranking.
- Plain-text answers about price ranges, areas served, timings and languages are what AI answers quote.
- Ask every customer for a review, never offer a reward for one and never ask only the happy customers.
How AI assistants decide which businesses to mention
When someone in Pune types "best AC service near Baner that works on Sunday" into ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity, the assistant usually runs a web search, reads a handful of pages and listings, and writes a short answer with names. Being recommended is therefore mostly about being findable, readable and trusted on the open web. This is often called generative engine optimisation, or GEO.
The rules are less mysterious than they sound. Google's own guidance on AI Overviews and AI Mode says there are no extra steps: the same SEO basics apply, and you do not need special AI text files or new schema markup. For local results, Google states plainly that there is no way to request or pay for a better ranking. Every step below is something you control.
Step 1: Let the right crawlers read your website
Each assistant uses its own crawler. If your website, hosting or CDN blocks it, you cannot appear in that assistant's answers, however good your business is.
| Crawler | Used for | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Googlebot | Google Search, AI Overviews and AI Mode | Allow it |
| OAI-SearchBot | Showing sites in ChatGPT search answers | Allow it if you want to appear in ChatGPT |
| GPTBot | OpenAI model training only | Your choice, it does not control ChatGPT search |
| PerplexityBot | Showing and linking sites in Perplexity answers | Allow it |
Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for Disallow lines under these names. Ask your web developer to check firewall or bot-protection settings too, because some security plugins and CDN settings can block AI crawlers. OpenAI and Perplexity both say robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to apply.
Step 2: Treat your Google Business Profile as your AI profile
For Google, local answers lean heavily on your Business Profile. Google says local ranking depends on relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance and prominence (how well known you are, including reviews and links). Its tips are simple:
- Verify the profile and choose the most specific primary category.
- Fill in every field: address if customers visit, service areas, phone, website and attributes such as parking or wheelchair access.
- Keep hours correct, and add special hours before Diwali, Christmas and other holidays.
- Add real photos of your shop, team and work.
- Reply to reviews, good and bad, politely and specifically.
Use exactly the same business name, address and phone number on your website, Instagram bio, JustDial-style listings and WhatsApp profile. Mismatched details make it harder for any system to be sure they all describe one business.
Step 3: Publish the answers customers actually ask
AI answers quote clear, specific text. Most small business websites have a nice banner and very little that answers a question. Add a plain-text FAQ or services page that covers:
- Price ranges in rupees, for example "split AC service from ₹599, gas refill from ₹2,499". Ranges are fine if exact prices vary.
- Areas served, named the way people search: "Baner, Aundh, Wakad and Hinjewadi".
- Timings, including Sundays and late evenings.
- Languages your team speaks, such as Marathi, Hindi and English.
- What is included, warranty, turnaround time and how to book.
Keep this content in text, not inside images or PDFs. Avoid copying the same page fifty times with only the city name changed, which reads as thin content to people and machines alike. One honest, detailed page per real location or service is better.
Step 4: Earn reviews the honest way
Reviews feed prominence and often supply the exact words an AI answer repeats. Google's contribution policy forbids offering discounts, free services or any reward in exchange for a review, and forbids selectively asking only satisfied customers. Breaking these rules risks removed reviews or a suspended profile.
The safe method is boring and effective: ask every customer, at the right moment, with a direct link. For a salon that is a few hours after the appointment. For a repair service it is after the job is marked complete. A steady flow of recent reviews looks more trustworthy than a sudden burst. Our feedback and review collection guide covers timing and wording.
Doing the follow-through on Convo360
Being recommended only helps if the enquiry that follows is answered quickly. Convo360 is an AI chat and calling platform, and three pieces fit this job:
- Review requests on WhatsApp. In the Flow Builder, trigger a flow when a job is marked done (via inbound webhook or manual / API), then use Send Template with a thank-you message and your Google review link. Send it to every customer, not a filtered list.
- One source of truth for answers. Upload the same FAQ page to your AI agent's knowledge base, so the website chat widget and WhatsApp give the same prices and timings that AI search reads. See how to train a knowledge base.
- Instant replies to new visitors. People arriving from an AI answer often message straight away. An AI Reply step answers in Hindi, Marathi or English and a Save CRM lead step records the enquiry for your team.

Frequently asked questions
Can I pay to get my business recommended by ChatGPT or Gemini?
There is no published paid option for organic recommendations. Google states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Ads are a separate, clearly labelled product. Organic visibility comes from crawler access, a complete profile, clear content and genuine reviews.
Does blocking GPTBot stop my business appearing in ChatGPT?
No. OpenAI says GPTBot is used for model training, while OAI-SearchBot is used to show websites in ChatGPT search. The settings are independent, so you can block training and still allow search. Sites that block OAI-SearchBot may not appear in ChatGPT search answers.
Do I need an llms.txt file or special schema to appear in Google AI Mode?
Google's guidance says no. AI Overviews and AI Mode use the same index and fundamentals as normal Search, with no new machine-readable files or special schema required. Structured data still helps if it matches the visible page text.
How long does it take to start appearing in AI answers?
There is no fixed timeline. Robots.txt changes reach OpenAI and Perplexity in about a day, but appearing in answers depends on being crawled, indexed and judged relevant. Treat it as an ongoing habit of updating your profile, content and reviews rather than a one-time task.
Can I offer a discount to customers who leave a Google review?
No. Google's contribution policy prohibits offering payment, discounts, free goods or services in exchange for reviews, and prohibits asking only happy customers. Ask every customer, give them a direct link and accept that some reviews will be critical.
