CNAP caller name display from 1 November 2026: what it means for business calls

Updated 2026-10-22 · 5 min read · By the Convo360 team

In short

CNAP, or Calling Name Presentation, shows the caller's registered name next to the number on the receiving phone. The Department of Telecommunications has told operators to switch it on for 4G and 5G users from 1 November 2026, without customers having to ask. Businesses and bulk connections can show a verified preferred name, such as a registered trademark or GST trade name.

Key takeaways
  • A DoT circular dated 13 October 2026 directs operators to provide CNAP on 4G and higher networks from 1 November 2026.
  • For unsaved callers, the name comes from the caller's operator records collected at KYC; saved contacts still show the saved name.
  • Business and bulk connections can display a preferred name that is a registered trademark or a trade name on the GST portal.
  • 2G, 3G and landline networks are not part of the first rollout and will be considered separately.
  • If your AI agent calls from a provider's virtual number or trunk, ask the provider what name will appear.

What CNAP is and what changes on 1 November

Until now, an Indian phone showed only the number of an unknown caller. Under CNAP the caller's name becomes part of the calling line identification, so the screen shows two fields: the number and a name.

According to news reports of 15 October 2026 on the Department of Telecommunications circular dated 13 October, operators must provide the service to each user without any separate request, from 1 November 2026. The order is tied to Rule 48 of the Telecommunications (Authorisation for Provision of Principal Telecommunication Services) Rules, 2026.

This had been a long time coming. TRAI first recommended CNAP on customer request in February 2024. After the DoT sent the recommendation back in September 2025, TRAI agreed in October 2025 to make it the default. Trials ran from November 2025 in Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, and an earlier March 2026 target for nationwide coverage was missed.

This page summarises those reports as read on 21 October 2026. Check your operator's notice for the final details.

Where the displayed name comes from

Operators have to follow a security-by-design approach, and the lookup must not retain the caller's name after the call ends. They also need a time-bound process to resolve complaints.

One practical gap: reports on the circular do not describe a way for users to switch CNAP off, although TRAI's October 2025 position had mentioned an opt-out. Treat that point as open until your operator publishes its process.

How a business shows its brand name instead of a person's

This is the part that matters most for companies. Many business SIMs and lines were taken in a director's or employee's name. Without action, customers may see "Ramesh Patel" when your clinic calls, which looks odd and lowers trust.

The circular allows business and bulk connections to show a preferred name instead of the name in subscriber records. The reports say the name must be either:

Operators must verify the name. New connections need original documents at the time of application, and operators have to set up an application process for existing connections. If you run sales or support from several SIMs, apply for every line, not just the main number.

What is not covered yet

The first phase covers 4G and higher wireless networks only. 2G, 3G and landline (PSTN) networks will be taken up separately, after further examination. Handsets were not addressed in the circular, according to ThePrint's report.

That has a direct effect on business calling. Many calls from businesses do not leave from an ordinary 4G mobile SIM. They go out from a telephony provider's virtual numbers, SIP trunks, or the special series TRAI has set aside, such as 140, 1600 and the new 1601. Whether and how a name appears for those depends on how the provider's numbers are set up, so do not assume your brand name will show on day one.

Why CNAP matters for AI calls

An outbound AI call only works if the customer picks up. Unknown numbers are often ignored or rejected, and a clear business name on screen gives people a reason to answer.

It also raises the bar on honesty. If the screen says "Sharma Diagnostics" and the AI agent opens with a different brand, the customer will notice. Make the agent's first line match the displayed name exactly.

CNAP works alongside the number series. A 1600 or 1601 number tells a customer the call is a genuine service call, and a name tells them who it is from. Together they make it harder for fraudsters to impersonate you. The series rules are in our guide to TRAI's 140, 1600 and 1601 numbers.

A short checklist on Convo360

Convo360 runs AI calls on your own Exotel, Plivo, Twilio or SIP account, so the calling name is between you and your telephony provider. What you control in Convo360 is what the agent says and what happens next.

  1. Ask your telephony provider what name will show for each number connected under Phone Numbers, and apply for a preferred name where you can.
  2. Set the agent's First message to use the same business name the customer sees on screen.
  3. Add a post-call action that sends a WhatsApp follow-up, so a missed call still reaches the customer from a recognisable business profile.
  4. Review transcripts and outcomes in Calls after the first week of November to see whether answer rates have changed.

Setup steps are in the voice docs.

Example conversation

Our Pune clinic's number is in the doctor's name. From November will patients see her personal name when our AI agent calls?
On a 4G or 5G phone, an unsaved number will show the KYC name unless a preferred name is registered. Apply to your operator to show the clinic's registered trademark or GST trade name, and ask your telephony provider about any virtual numbers.

Frequently asked questions

What is CNAP in India?

CNAP stands for Calling Name Presentation. It shows the caller's name alongside the number on the receiving phone. For unsaved domestic callers the name comes from the caller's operator records, and international calls show the words International Call.

When does CNAP start?

News reports of 15 October 2026 on a DoT circular dated 13 October say operators must provide CNAP from 1 November 2026 on 4G and higher networks. 2G, 3G and landline networks will be considered separately.

Can my business show its brand name instead of the SIM owner's name?

Yes, for business and bulk connections. According to reports on the circular, you can display a preferred name that is a registered trademark or a trade name registered on the GST portal. The operator verifies it before it is shown.

Do customers have to switch CNAP on?

No. The circular, as reported, says operators shall provide the service to each user without any separate request. Reports do not describe a switch-off option, so check your operator's own notice for the latest position.

Will CNAP show a name for AI calls from virtual numbers?

It depends on the number. The first phase covers 4G and higher wireless networks, and many business calls go out on provider virtual numbers or trunks. Ask your telephony provider what name will display for each number you use.
